With COVID-19 causing ethics bowl cancellations, school disruptions, and generally throwing a wrench into life as we know it, here’s a 10-minute tip vid on how to teach philosophy online. If you have your own ideas (especially ethics-bowl specific stuff), please share — would love to put together a post on how to coach/practice/continue ethics bowl online.
This virus will pass. In the meantime, stay strong! The world will continue to need ethics bowl as a beacon of civility and thoughtfulness (as this crisis is proving). You’re as much a part of that as anyone, so wash those hands 🙂
Hey Matt, great video! I am the moderator from the Auzzie ethics Olympiad other day. I’ve been doing online debate and philosophy teaching for a while now, and me and my brother are currently starting up a philosophy course in Canada (we have done a class in China already, and our fist summer camp session beginning in two weeks and another class planned to start shortly afterwards). We are also looking to get an Ethics Olympiad comp organised in Canada. Given your immense experience and passion for this stuff, we would love to be in touch. Really appreciate all of your online material 🙂 this is definitely not urgent, but if you have time, shoot me an email when it suits you and perhaps we could have a quick chat about all of the above 🙂
Cheers!
Theo (and Archie)
PS. We both did philosophy undergrads, and now I’m finishing up a masters in the UK and applying for PhD programs.
Theo, thanks so much, and excellent job moderating the Olympiad! Thanks for tolerating my crashing the party 😀 I was was really looking forward to judging. Imagine the sinking feeling I had when I realized it was already Wednesday in Australia…
Sounds like you and Archie are doing some amazing work — will definitely connect. Love that you’re spreading the initiative not only in Canada, but China.
Thanks again, and looking forward to connecting soon, Matt
